On March 13, two exotic dancers showed up to perform at an off-campus party for the Duke University men's lacrosse team. The women were black; all the men but one, white. What happened after that is the subject of a rape investigation that has ratcheted up racial tensions between the Southern school and its town, catapulted "duke lacrosse" into our top sports searches, and snowballed into a national story.
Duke lacrosse players Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann have been charged with raping and kidnapping a stripper.
New York's Newsday is covering the case closely. Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Massachusetts top the list of out-of-state areas seeking the story online. And searches on the scandal, rape, and team have soared off the charts. Interest in Duke, nearby North Carolina Central University (where the accuser attends school), and chief prosecutor Mike Nifong have also leapt.
